I’ve witnessed firsthand how personal growth directly impacts business success. Entrepreneurship is as much about growing as a person as it is about growing a business. As we approach the fourth quarter of 2024, I find myself reflecting on how lessons from my own entrepreneurial journey have helped me grow as not only a person but also a business owner. I want to share some of those insights in this post.
1. The Power of Intentional Rest
In our fast-paced entrepreneurial world, rest is often seen as a luxury we can’t afford. We’re bombarded with messages about hustling, grinding, and burning the midnight oil. But what if I told you that intentional rest could be the key to unlocking your next level of success? It might sound counterintuitive, but some of our biggest breakthroughs come when we step back and give ourselves space to breathe.
This lesson hit home for me in a big way in 2023 when I made a decision that seemed radical at the time: I took a three-month break from my businesses. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment vacation but a carefully planned strategic pause. That experience taught me about the power of rest and how it can fuel personal growth and business innovation in ways you might never expect. Here’s what I learned:
- Rest fuels creativity and innovation: During my break, I found that my mind was free to wander and explore new ideas. Without the constant pressure of daily operations, I was able to think more creatively about long-term strategies and innovations for my business.
- Reflection time is essential for personal and professional alignment: I used this time to check in with my values and vision. Are my actions aligned with my core beliefs? Is my business heading in the direction I truly want? This reflection led to some significant shifts in my approach to leadership and business strategy.
- Trusting your team and systems is a growth opportunity in itself: Stepping back allowed me to see how well my team could function without my constant involvement. It was a lesson in delegation and trust-building that has transformed how I lead.
Real-world impact: After my break, I returned with a fresh perspective that led to a 30% increase in productivity and a noticeable improvement in team morale. The clarity I gained helped me make decisive changes that streamlined our processes and improved our bottom line.
Growth Exercise: Schedule a “rest and reflect” day in your calendar. Use this time to reconnect with your core values and vision for both personal and professional growth. Ask yourself:
- What aspects of my business energize me?
- Where am I feeling stuck or burned out?
- How can I create more space for creativity and innovation in my daily routine?
2. The Growth in Keeping Commitments
We’ve all been there – that moment when a commitment we’ve made starts to feel overwhelming, impossible even. Maybe it’s a project that’s grown beyond its original scope or a deadline that suddenly seems unrealistic. It’s tempting in these moments to look for an escape hatch, to find a way to gracefully (or not so gracefully) bow out. But what if these moments of doubt and difficulty are actually our greatest opportunities for growth?
Last year, I faced one of my biggest challenges ever: fulfilling a commitment to publish a collaborative book with the Leading Lady Ambassadors. As the obstacles piled up, I was tempted more than once to call it quits. But pushing through this challenge taught me invaluable lessons about integrity, creativity, and the power of community. When it seemed impossible, this experience reinforced that:
- Integrity is a cornerstone of personal growth: There were moments when I wanted to give up, but I knew that following through on my commitment was crucial not just for the project, but for my personal growth as a leader.
- Creativity flourishes when faced with obstacles: When our original plan fell through, we had to think outside the box. This led us to partner with a publishing expert who brought fresh ideas to the table, ultimately resulting in a better product than we initially envisioned.
- Your network is a powerful resource for personal development: Reaching out to my network for help was humbling but incredibly rewarding. It reminded me that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a strength that opens doors to new possibilities.
Real-world impact: Not only did we publish the book project We Lead in November 2024, but it exceeded my original expectations and became a best-seller in several categories. The collaborative process strengthened relationships within our network and opened up new opportunities for partnerships and growth. It also led to a second volume, which will be published in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Growth Exercise: Identify a commitment you’re struggling with. How can you approach it creatively? Who in your network might offer a fresh perspective? Take these steps:
- List all your current commitments and identify any you’re struggling with.
- For each challenging commitment, brainstorm three creative approaches to fulfilling it.
- Identify 2-3 people in your network with relevant experience or insights.
- Reach out to these contacts for advice or support.
3. The Art of the Sincere Apology
In both our personal lives and our businesses, mistakes are inevitable. We’re human, after all. But what sets great leaders apart isn’t an absence of mistakes – it’s how they handle those mistakes when they occur. One of the most powerful tools in our personal growth arsenal is something many of us struggle with: the art of the sincere apology. It’s more than just saying “I’m sorry.” A truly sincere apology requires vulnerability, emotional intelligence, and a willingness to put relationships before ego.
Over the past several years, I’ve had to navigate some challenging situations that required me to master the art of the sincere apology. The process wasn’t always comfortable, but it led to profound personal growth and strengthened relationships in ways I never expected. Here’s why it matters:
- Emotional intelligence grows through acknowledging others’ feelings: A sincere apology requires empathy and the ability to see situations from others’ perspectives. This skill is crucial not just in personal relationships, but in business negotiations and team leadership.
- Letting go of ego is a powerful personal development tool: It’s easy to get defensive when we make mistakes. Learning to set aside my ego and truly own my actions has been transformative in both my personal and professional relationships.
- Strong relationships are built on accountability and genuine communication. I’ve found that taking full responsibility for my actions and communicating openly about my mistakes usually strengthens rather than weakens relationships.
Real-world example: In a recent project, I made a decision without fully consulting a key team member. When I realized my mistake, my first instinct was to justify my actions. Instead, I took a deep breath and apologized sincerely, acknowledging how my action must have made them feel sidelined. This open communication led to a frank discussion about our decision-making processes and ultimately strengthened our working relationship.
Growth Exercise: Reflect on a recent situation where you could have handled things better. Practice crafting a sincere apology, focusing on the impact of your actions rather than your intentions. Follow these steps:
- Identify the specific action you’re apologizing for.
- Reflect on the impact this action had on others.
- Take full responsibility without making excuses.
- Express genuine remorse.
- Offer to make amends or change your behavior in the future.
4. Growing Through Letting Go
As entrepreneurs, we’re builders by nature. We create businesses, cultivate relationships, develop products, and nurture teams. With so much energy focused on building and growing, the idea of letting go can feel counterintuitive, even scary. But what if I told you that sometimes, the key to moving forward is to release what’s holding you back?
The past few years have taught me a powerful lesson about the growth that comes from letting go – of outdated ideas, of projects that no longer serve us, and sometimes even of relationships that have run their course. It’s not always easy, but learning to recognize when it’s time to let go and doing so with grace and without resentment can open doors to new opportunities and fuel personal growth in unexpected ways. Here is what I have learned:
- Recognizing misalignment is a sign of personal growth: As we evolve, sometimes we outgrow relationships, projects, or even aspects of our business. Recognizing when something no longer aligns with our values or goals is a sign of personal growth and self-awareness.
- Setting healthy boundaries is an act of self-respect: Learning to say “no” to opportunities or relationships that don’t serve our highest good is crucial for personal and professional growth. It’s about valuing our time, energy, and well-being.
- Releasing what no longer serves you creates space for new opportunities: Every time I’ve let go of something that wasn’t working – whether it was a business partnership, a project, or a personal commitment – it has invariably led to new, often unexpected opportunities.
Real-world impact: Last year, I made the difficult decision to step away from a long-standing business partnership. While it was challenging, this decision freed up time and energy that allowed me to pursue a new venture that’s now one of the most fulfilling aspects of my business.
Growth Exercise: Identify one relationship or commitment that’s no longer aligned with your growth. How can you release it gracefully? Consider these steps:
- List the pros and cons of maintaining this relationship or commitment.
- Reflect on how it aligns (or doesn’t) with your current values and goals.
- Imagine how you might feel if you let it go. What opportunities might open up?
- Draft a plan for how you could gracefully exit or transition away from this commitment.
5. Personal Growth Through Boundary Setting
In the world of entrepreneurship, especially for women, there’s often pressure to be everything to everyone. We want to be supportive colleagues, attentive mentors, responsive service providers, and still have energy left for our personal lives. In this context, setting boundaries can feel selfish or even counterproductive. But what if I told you that clear, healthy boundaries are not just good for you but essential for your business and everyone around you?
In the past few years, I’ve learned some tough but transformative lessons about the power of boundary setting. It’s not just about saying “no” – it’s about defining your values, respecting your own needs, and ultimately, showing up as your best self in both your personal and professional life. I’ve learned:
- You can be supportive and have strong boundaries: Many women entrepreneurs struggle with the fear that setting boundaries will make them seem unsupportive or unkind. In reality, clear boundaries allow us to show up more fully and authentically in our supportive roles.
- Clear communication is key to personal and professional relationships: Learning to articulate my boundaries clearly and respectfully has dramatically improved my professional relationships and reduced stress and misunderstandings.
- Staying true to your values is a form of personal growth. Every time we enforce a boundary, we reaffirm our values and grow in self-respect. This ripples out into all areas of our lives, including our businesses.
Real-world example: I recently had to set a clear boundary with a client who consistently expected work outside of our agreed scope. While it was uncomfortable at first, clearly communicating my boundaries led to a more respectful relationship and actually resulted in an expanded (and properly compensated) contract.
Growth Exercise: Define three non-negotiable boundaries in your personal or professional life. Practice communicating these clearly and respectfully. Here’s how:
- Identify areas in your life where you feel drained or taken advantage of.
- For each area, define a clear, specific boundary that would address the issue.
- Write out how you would communicate this boundary respectfully but firmly.
- Role-play the conversation with a trusted friend or mentor to practice.
Embracing Continuous Personal Growth
As we navigate our entrepreneurial journeys, remember that personal growth is an ongoing process. These lessons aren’t about reaching perfection; they’re about continual progress and self-improvement.
To foster ongoing personal growth:
- Make regular self-reflection a habit: Set aside time each week to journal or meditate on your personal and professional growth.
- Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth: When faced with difficulties, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?”
- Seek feedback and be open to constructive criticism: Regularly ask for feedback from team members, mentors, and even clients.
- Invest in personal development resources and experiences: Attend workshops, read widely, and consider working with a coach or mentor.
- Celebrate your growth milestones, no matter how small: Acknowledge and reward yourself for your progress.
Remember, as women entrepreneurs, our personal growth directly influences our business success. By focusing on our own development, we not only improve ourselves but also become better leaders, innovators, and change-makers in our industries.
