You know that feeling when you’re sitting alone at your desk, staring at your screen, wondering if you’re the only one facing these challenges? I get it. Women entrepreneurs everywhere have been there. That overwhelming sensation of trying to do it all, be it all, while maintaining your sanity and growing your business.
The truth? Success isn’t a solo sport. As women entrepreneurs, we shine brightest when we connect, support, and lift each other up. This isn’t just a feel-good statement – it’s backed by countless success stories and research.
The Leading Lady community started online, but I always knew we needed real-life connections. In those early days, I’d host coffee meetups and rent spaces around Annapolis for workshops. Picture this: me, dragging my trusty red wagon filled with supplies through downtown, setting up pop-up spaces wherever we could gather. Those workshops became the highlight of everyone’s month – a chance for women entrepreneurs to step away from their screens and connect face-to-face.
From Dream to Reality: The Birth of The Collective
But I kept dreaming bigger. While the online community thrived and the in-person workshops filled up fast, I yearned for a permanent space where women entrepreneurs could gather at any time. A place that was truly ours. Not just for scheduled events but for those impromptu brainstorming sessions, quiet work days, or coffee catch-ups that often spark the best ideas.
In 2021, I purchased a building to house my dream, and that building became The Collective. It’s a place where local women entrepreneurs can gather for networking, workshops, social events, coworking, and much more. Many events are open to everyone, but we have memberships that give local women entrepreneurs a closer community with more benefits. Members meet monthly for breakfast or lunch. They can also reserve the large, open event area, podcast recording studio, and lounge for their own events.
A Leap of Faith During Uncertain Times
I actually bought the building right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. While most businesses were pulling back, I took a giant leap forward. Was it an easy decision? Absolutely not. There were many sleepless nights, endless spreadsheets, and more than a few moments of “What on earth was I thinking?”
But here’s the thing – the pandemic highlighted just how crucial community and connection are, especially for women entrepreneurs. I witnessed so many female business owners struggling in isolation, trying to navigate uncharted waters without a lifeline. That’s when I knew – pandemic or not – I had to create this space for women entrepreneurs.
I’ll never forget the day we first opened the doors to the public. The paint was barely dry, and we still had several unopened boxes hidden away upstairs, but the energy in the space was electric. Women from all walks of life – startup founders, executives, creatives – filled the space, their eyes sparkling with excitement and possibility. In that moment, I knew in my bones we’d created something truly special for our community of businesswomen.
The Magic of Finding Your Tribe: More Than Just Networking
Now, let’s talk about why finding your tribe of like-minded women is so important. Through my years of coaching and my own wild ride as an entrepreneur, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the right network can catapult a woman’s journey to new heights. But it’s more than just career advancement – it’s about personal growth, emotional support, and creating a ripple effect of empowerment among women in business.
1. Skill Development That Actually Matters
At The Collective, we focus on real, actionable skills that women need, not just for their businesses but for their whole lives. We have hosted workshops on everything from SEO and Instagram Reels to intuitive eating and yoga. This diverse range of topics reflects the multifaceted nature of women entrepreneurs – we’re not just business owners, we’re whole people with varied interests and needs.
2. Networking That Feels Natural for Women Entrepreneurs
Gone are the days of awkward small talk and forced business card exchanges. In our space, networking happens organically. I love watching women connect over shared challenges or complementary skills. I have watched countless joint ventures form over breakfast or lunch. That’s the magic of authentic networking.
3. Visibility and Recognition on Your Terms
One of the most rewarding aspects of our collective is seeing women step into the spotlight on their own terms. Take Jenn, for instance. A brilliant graphic designer, Jenn had always shied away from public speaking. But with the encouragement of our community and opportunities to practice in a safe space, she’s now a regular speaker at our events. It’s about creating a platform where every woman’s expertise is valued and celebrated.
4. Resource Sharing That Accelerates Growth for Women Entrepreneurs
The spirit of generosity in our community never fails to amaze me. I’ve seen women share everything from their favorite productivity apps to their trusted legal advisors. This culture of sharing has saved our members countless hours and dollars. But more importantly, it’s fostered a sense of abundance – the idea that there’s enough success to go around, and by lifting each other up, we all rise.
5. Confidence Building Through Community
Perhaps the most profound transformation I’ve witnessed is in the confidence of our women entrepreneurs. There’s something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by women who believe in you, sometimes even more than you believe in yourself. Watching women blossom into confident business owners, speaking at our events, and mentoring newcomers has been one of my greatest joys.
Creating Your Own Empowering Space for Women Entrepreneurs
While I wish I could welcome each of you personally to my space in Annapolis, I know that’s not possible for everyone. But here’s the good news – you can create or find your own empowering network wherever you are. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Scout out local women’s business organizations or chapters of national networks in your area.
- Don’t be afraid to start small – even a monthly coffee meetup with like-minded women can be the seed of a powerful network.
- Tap into online platforms to connect with women in your industry or with similar goals.
- Hit up workshops or conferences focused on women entrepreneurs – these are goldmines for meeting potential network members.
- Take the initiative in organizing events or skill-sharing sessions. Leadership often starts with that first step.
Remember, the power of networking for women entrepreneurs cannot be overstated. It’s not just about exchanging business cards – it’s about building long-term relationships, finding mentors and mentees, and creating a support system that can weather any storm.
