You’re always looking for ways to take your business to the next level. You’ve got big dreams and even bigger goals, and you’re willing to put in the work to make them happen. But here’s the thing: growing a successful business isn’t just about hustle and grind. It’s about making smart, strategic investments in yourself and your company at each stage of the journey. It’s about sustainable growth.
The question is, how do you know what to invest in, when to invest in it, and in what order to follow? It can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re working with a limited budget and trying to wear all the hats.
As a business coach who’s been in your shoes, I’m here to share some hard-won wisdom on how to approach investing in your business for sustainable growth. Because here’s the truth: you have to spend money to make money. But you don’t have to break the bank or make all the investments at once.
The Myth of the Overnight Success
When we look at other successful entrepreneurs, it’s easy to assume they had it all figured out from day one. They must have started with the perfect website, the polished branding, and the killer marketing strategy, right?
Wrong. The reality is that every business starts somewhere. And more often than not, that somewhere is bootstrapped, DIY, and a little bit scrappy. The key is to start where you are, with what you have, and build from there.
I’ve seen this play out time and time again with the women in my Leading Ladies Masterclass. They come to me feeling stuck and overwhelmed, wondering how they’ll ever afford to invest in all the things they “should” have to grow their business.
But here’s what I tell them: business growth isn’t a linear path. It’s more like a spiral staircase, where you’re constantly circling back to the same areas (branding, website, marketing, etc.) and investing in them at higher levels as your business evolves.
Investing in Stages: A Case Study
To illustrate this concept, let me share a bit of my own journey with Leading Lady Coaching. When I first started my business in 2016, I knew I wanted to invest in my education and skills. So, I took a big chunk of my savings and enrolled in a certified coaching program.
Was it scary to make that financial commitment upfront? Absolutely. But I trusted that investing in my own growth would pay off in the long run. And you know what? It did.
While I was still in school, I started putting myself out there on social media, letting my network know about my new venture. And lo and behold, a previous colleague reached out with a coaching opportunity that ended up covering the cost of my entire program.
From there, I continued to use free and low-cost resources to build my brand and attract clients. I created a Facebook business page, joined local networking groups, and offered free workshops to get my name out there.
As I started bringing in more revenue, I set aside a portion of every check to reinvest in my business. First, it was a basic logo and website. Then, it was upgraded marketing materials and professional photos. Eventually, it was a complete rebrand and high-end website redesign.
At each stage, I focused on making the investments that would give me the highest return and move my business forward. I didn’t try to do everything at once or compare myself to others who were further along. I trusted the process and kept putting one foot in front of the other.
How to Invest in Business Growth
So, how can you apply this approach to your own business? Here are a few key tips:
- Start where you are. Don’t wait until you have the “perfect” budget or plan to start taking action. Use the resources you have, even if they’re limited, and focus on providing value to your audience.
- Set aside a percentage of your revenue for reinvestment. Aim for 10-20% of every paycheck, and have a clear plan for how you’ll use that money to grow your business.
- Prioritize high-impact investments. Look for opportunities that will give you the biggest bang for your buck, whether that’s a coaching program, a website upgrade, or a targeted marketing campaign.
- Don’t be afraid to start small and DIY. You don’t need a Fortune 500 budget to make progress. Use free and low-cost tools like Canva, social media, and local networking to build momentum.
- Focus on your zone of genius. As you start bringing in more revenue, look for ways to outsource the tasks that drain your energy or fall outside your skillset. Investing in support will free you up to focus on what you do best.
- Keep circling back and leveling up. As your business grows, continue to reinvest in the core areas of your brand, marketing, and operations. Each time, you’ll be able to make more significant upgrades and see a higher return.
Above all, remember that growing a successful business takes time, patience, and consistent effort. There will be ups and downs, triumphs and setbacks. But if you stay focused on your vision and keep making strategic investments, you will get there.
