Hey there, Leading Lady! Can we get real for a second? When I chose “simplify” as my word for 2023, I thought I was signing up for a year of decluttered desks and streamlined systems. I was eager to simplify my business and create more ease in my work life. Boy, was I in for a surprise!
Instead of zen-like calm, I found myself smack dab in the middle of what felt like a tornado. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong – across all my businesses and even in my personal life. It was messy, it was stressful, and for a hot minute there, I wondered if I’d made a huge mistake in trying to simplify my business.
But here’s the thing I discovered: sometimes, the path to simplify your business is paved with chaos. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed in your own journey to streamline your operations, I want you to know you’re not alone – and there’s hope on the other side of the mess.
The Paradox of Simplification: Why It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better
Think about the last time you cleaned out your purse. (If you’re anything like me, it probably involved dumping everything onto the floor, creating a temporary disaster zone in your living room!) But that mess was necessary to sort through what you needed and what was just taking up space.
The same principle applies when you simplify your business. You’ve got to pull everything apart before you can put it back together in a more efficient way. It’s not always pretty, but it’s so worth it in the end.
Here’s what this looked like in my world as I worked to simplify my business:
- Digital decluttering turned into a file-finding nightmare as I consolidated systems
- Streamlining services meant having tough conversations with some long-term clients
- Realigning with my values required facing some hard truths about where I was out of integrity
Each of these steps felt like I was moving backward at first. But as the dust settled, I started to see the method in the madness. My systems became more intuitive, my client roster more aligned, and my sense of purpose clearer than ever.
Strategies for Navigating the Messy Middle
So how do you keep your cool when everything feels like it’s falling apart as you simplify your business? Here are a few strategies that have been lifesavers for me and my Leading Ladies:
- Reconnect with your why: When the going gets tough, it’s easy to lose sight of why you started this simplification journey in the first place. Take some time to revisit your core values and big-picture vision. I love using a value-mining exercise that explores three key questions and using the answers to identify 5-7 core values that will guide me as a simplify:
- What do you admire most in others?
- What’s the opposite of the things you loathe?
- What brings you genuine joy?
- Break it down: Trying to simplify everything at once is a recipe for overwhelm. Instead, focus on one area at a time. Maybe you start with your client onboarding process, then move on to your marketing systems. Small wins build momentum!
- Embrace the “peace over profit” mindset: As ambitious women, it’s tempting to push through discomfort in the name of growth. But true simplification requires listening to your gut. If something feels off, even if it’s “good for business,” it might be time to let it go.
- Seek support: You don’t have to simplify your business alone! Consider working with a coach (I still have my own coach, even as a coach myself!), joining a mastermind group, or simply venting to a trusted biz bestie. Sometimes an outside perspective is exactly what you need to see the forest for the trees.
- Celebrate the small victories: In the midst of chaos, it’s easy to fixate on what’s not working. Make a conscious effort to acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Did you finally delete that email list of unengaged subscribers? That’s worth a happy dance!
The Emotional Rollercoaster of Simplification
Let’s be honest – when you simplify your business, it’s not just about systems and strategies. It’s an emotional journey, too. You might feel excited one day and completely overwhelmed the next. Frustrated in the morning and hopeful by afternoon. It’s all normal, I promise!
The key is to use your emotions as valuable data. When something in your business triggers anxiety, loneliness, or that icky pit-in-your-stomach feeling, pay attention. It’s often a sign that area needs some simplification love.
On the flip side, notice what brings you joy, ease, and a sense of flow. Those are the elements to amplify as you streamline.
Remember, there’s no shame in having big feelings about your business. You’ve poured your heart and soul into building something amazing. It’s personal, and that’s okay. Honoring your emotions (while not letting them run the show) is a powerful part of creating a business that truly serves you.
The Light at the End of the Tunnel
I know the process to simplify your business can feel never-ending when you’re in the thick of it. But I promise you, Leading Lady, there is a payoff waiting for you on the other side.
As I’ve embraced the mess and kept moving forward to simplify my business, I’ve started to experience:
- Clearer decision-making (no more agonizing over every little choice!)
- Increased focus and productivity (goodbye, shiny object syndrome!)
- A greater sense of peace and alignment in my work
- More time and energy for the things that truly matter (in business AND life)
The best part? These benefits compound over time. The more you simplify your business, the easier it becomes to maintain that simplicity and continue growing with intention.
