Have you ever sat through a workshop or presentation that left you feeling more confused than inspired? Or maybe you’ve struggled to create your own workshops and presentations that truly showcase the value of your business and leave attendees eager to work with you. Being able to effectively communicate who you are, what you offer, and why you’re the best choice is crucial for attracting your ideal clients and growing your impact. But let’s be real: crafting a compelling workshop or presentation can feel overwhelming, especially if public speaking isn’t your favorite thing. That’s why I’m excited to share with you a simple, powerful formula for creating an effective workshop or presentation that will have your audience hanging on your every word. This 6-step framework has been a game-changer for the women in my Annapolis Collective networking and education group, and I know it will help you, too!
The Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of Winning Workshops and Presentations
When you’re mapping out your next workshop or presentation, make sure to cover these six key elements:
- Who: Clearly define who your ideal clients are. Who do you serve, and what are their specific needs, challenges, and goals?
- What: Get specific about what products or services you offer. What tangible solutions or results do you provide?
- Where: Clarify where you serve clients. Are you local, national, or international? Do you work in-person, online, or both?
- When: Guide people on when to hire you. What are the triggers or timelines for seeking out your services?
- Why: Communicate why you’re the best choice. What sets you apart from competitors, and what unique value do you bring?
- How: Explain how you deliver your products or services. What does the client experience look like from start to finish?
By addressing each of these components in your workshop structure, you’ll paint a clear, compelling picture of your business and make it easy for attendees to see how you can help them.
The Power of Putting It into Practice
I’ve seen firsthand how this simple structure can transform the way entrepreneurs communicate about their work. In the Annapolis Collective, our members take turns presenting at our monthly luncheons and hosting their own workshops in our event space. At first, many of the women struggled to create authentic and engaging presentations. They defaulted to generic elevator pitches or rambling explanations that left the audience more puzzled than inspired.
However, some of them came to me and asked how they could create effective presentations, and I introduced them to this 6-step framework. They found that by using the framework, their presentations became clear, concise, and powerfully persuasive. They were able to articulate their unique value and connect with their ideal clients in a whole new way.
One member, a personal stylist, used this structure to create a workshop on “Dressing for Success as a Female Entrepreneur.” She walked attendees through who she serves (busy professional women), what services she offers (closet audits, personal shopping, styling for events), where she works (both in-person and virtually), when to hire her (before a big presentation, during a career transition, for a special occasion), why her approach is unique (she focuses on empowerment and authentic expression, not just trends), and how her process works (from initial consultation to final reveal).
By the end of the workshop, she had a waiting list of dream clients eager to work with her. And the best part? She felt confident, energized, and truly proud of the way she represented her business.
Your Turn to Shine
So, Leading Lady, are you ready to uplevel your own workshop and presentation game? Start by brainstorming your own answers to the who, what, when, where, why, and how of your business. Don’t worry about getting it perfect; just focus on clarity and authenticity.
Then, look for opportunities to practice your new and improved presentation skills. Seek out local networking events, industry conferences, or online summits where you can share your expertise. Or consider hosting your own workshops, either in-person or virtually, to attract your ideal clients and showcase your value.
And remember: the world needs your unique gifts and perspective. When you’re able to communicate about your business with confidence and clarity, you’ll not only grow your impact and income but also inspire others to step into their own greatness.
