Hi there, leading ladies, and welcome back to the Leading Lady podcast. I’m your host, AliceAnne Loftus, and today I wanna talk to you about something that might sound lighthearted at first, but actually runs deep in science and in how we lead and live well. We’re talking about whimsy, that spark of joy, color, or beauty that makes us feel a little more alive.

A Bouquet of Fall Flowers in a Hotel Room

Earlier this week, I was speaking at a conference, and I had a wonderful conversation with another business owner about the importance of adding whimsy to your life. Doing things just because they make you smile, not because they’re productive or strategic. And after that conversation, we found ourselves in Target, because we were here at this conference for a week and realized that we didn’t pack half the stuff we needed.

But while we were at Target, I walked past a bouquet of flowers. They were so beautiful, the bright oranges and yellows of fall. And I’m in Texas, it’s 90 degrees here, and I’m missing home like crazy. Just seeing those fall colors, I immediately felt the dopamine increase, so I ended up buying the flowers and brought them back to my hotel room.

I took out the little coffee mug by the sink, made my own tiny floral arrangement, and put it on my nightstand. It was such a simple, spontaneous, and delightful thing to add. As I sat there looking at those flowers, I realized this isn’t just about the pretty decor. This was about care. This was intentional.

It’s about creating beauty even when you’re away from home. It’s about reminding myself that joy doesn’t wait until your to-do list is done. That small act of whimsy changed how I felt completely. It softened my edges for the week, and it brought me back to myself. And as I reflected, I thought, “Actually, this would make a really great podcast conversation,” because there is actual science behind why these little acts matter so much.

What Positive Psychology Taught Me

If you don’t know, I actually became certified in positive psychology back in 2019, and that had such a profound impact on me. Even if we have a strong negativity bias, even though our brain is programmed to look out for dangers or threats, and we’re actually thinking about negative things 75% of the time, through my positive psychology program, I learned how we can retrain our brain, and how positive psychology actually opens us up to be more productive, more creative, and more collaborative in our work. It actually helps us to be better leaders.

What Whimsy Really Is

First, I wanna talk about what whimsy really is. When we talk about whimsy, we’re not talking about being silly or careless. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. We’re talking about the art of adding surprise, delight, and beauty to everyday life. It’s curiosity, it’s play. It’s the courage to break out of the normal routines.

For leaders, especially women who are constantly showing up, managing, creating, and holding space for everyone else, whimsy is a form of nervous system care. At least I truly believe that. I know that I use it to regulate my nervous system. It’s a leadership tool that restores creativity and presence.

What the Research Says

Let’s get into what the research says. First, whimsy actually lights up the reward centers of your brain. When you look at something beautiful or unexpected, your brain releases dopamine, the same neurotransmitter linked to motivation and focus. The bouquet of flowers wasn’t just pretty. It gave my brain a mini reset, charging my attention and my creativity.

Second, beauty and novelty calm the nervous system. Studies show that even brief exposure to beautiful or nature-like visuals lowers our cortisol, which is our main stress hormone. It triggers the parasympathetic response. That’s the body’s natural rest-and-digest mode. So by bringing color, texture, or art into our environments, we’re literally creating micro-moments of regulation.

Whimsy Builds Resilience

Third, whimsy builds resilience. According to Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory, positive emotions like joy and delight expand our perspective and help us solve problems more creatively. So when we feel lighthearted, our minds open up. We collaborate better, and we connect faster. In other words, whimsy doesn’t make you less of a leader. It makes you a better one.

Practical Ways to Add Whimsy

So what are some practical ways to add whimsy? How do we bring whimsy into our lives and leadership? You don’t need to redecorate your office or start painting watercolors or take up crazy new hobbies, unless you want to. You can actually start small, like I did.

Buy yourself flowers, or light a candle at your desk or your nightstand. Rearrange your workspace, or add a piece of art that makes you smile. Add music to your morning routine or your next team meeting. Wear a pop of color, or bring a touch of beauty to your next presentation.

For me, some of the little things that I do, thinking about my office space back home: I love whimsy. If you look at my desk, you might think that a Taylor Swift-crazed teenager sits there. I love motivational pads of paper, the ones with the little quotes at the top. I love a beautiful pen. I have beautiful mugs that I drink my coffee out of.

I always have fresh flowers around me. I have little bits of art all around my office, and I’m just constantly looking for something that’s a little unexpected. In a work setting, whimsy invites curiosity, which invites creativity, and that’s the heartbeat of inspired leadership.

Leading With Light

So let’s touch on the leadership reframe. Here’s what I’ve learned. Whimsy doesn’t mean we’re taking life lightly. It means we’re leading with light. Okay, let me repeat that. Whimsy does not mean we’re taking life lightly. It means we’re leading with light. When we add playfulness and beauty, we create balance between the doing and the being, between structure and soul.

The floral arrangement in my hotel room reminded me that I don’t have to wait for home, or calm, or the perfect moment to feel grounded. I can create the feeling anywhere with just a little bit of whimsy.

One Whimsical Thing This Week

So I wanna leave you with this question. What’s one whimsical thing you could do this week? Something small, something just for you, that would make your space, your schedule, or your spirit feel a little bit lighter. Try it. Notice how it feels. And if you wanna share it, tag me or use the hashtag #LeadingWithWhimsy, because I’d love to see how you bring a little light into your leadership.

Thanks for listening. If this resonated with you, please reach out to me. I do read and respond to every email. I hope that this very short podcast episode just reminds you to take a minute. And if you’re not really feeling joy or creativity or presence in the work that you’re doing right now, take a look at your spaces.

Take a look at your life and where you can add a little more whimsy, or where whimsy is missing. Even the word whimsy or whimsical is just fun. I can feel the dopamine rising in my body. Not everything has to be heavy. Not everything has to be high-achieving and high-functioning and productive.

Sometimes we need to just take pause and remind ourselves that we’re human, and that we wanna feel joyful moments in the everyday, in the mundane. And it doesn’t have to be mundane. You have the power to add a little whimsy to your life, and it doesn’t take much.

So I hope that if this resonated with you, you’ll let me know. And until next time, take the lead.
